Mexican 50 pesos gold coin is considered to be one of the most beautiful coins in the world. The coin was issued to honour the 100-year anniversary from the successful end of Mexico's War of Independence. Coins were minted 1924-1947 and 1949-1972.

The obverse of the coin pictures an image of Winged Victory (El Angel de la Independencia). A laurel wreath in her right hand symbolizes victory and broken chains in her left symbolize freedom. Two famous Mexican volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihautl, rise in the background. The 1821 on the lower left commemorates the year of Mexico's independence. The date on the right indicates year of mintage, however, as known to us all coins issued 1949-1972 have “1947” marked as the mintage year.

The national coat of arms lies on the reverse. The Mexican coat of arms depicts the Mexican golden eagle devouring a snake while perched on a cactus.
